NUR 533 Quality and Safety in Healthcare

High-quality care in a safe environment is the primary expectation of all patients and healthcare practitioners. Research in evidence-based practice and clinical outcomes has demonstrated that quality and safety are not a given. This course will review the history of the focus on quality, safety, and cost in healthcare culminating in the IHI’s Quadruple Aim. Topics for exploration include quality improvement efforts, the cost/benefit ratio of quality, basic safety design principles, the impact of human factors on quality, the components of a just culture, and various national patient safety resources. The role of the nurse leader in leading quality initiatives will be explored. Students will integrate knowledge with practice through interviews and observations of quality and safety leaders and clinical leaders.
