MUS 306 Jazz Piano

Two hours per week. Designed for pianists and non-pianists alike, Jazz Piano provides an overview of the techniques utilized by professional jazz pianists and a basic working knowledge of the piano keyboard. The class will cover various chord structures (chord voicing) to be placed in basic diatonic progressions, the use of color tones in different chord types, and the changing roles of the left and right hand for comping (complementing) and for improvising. This course will also introduce the student to jazz standard repertoire by implementing American Jazz Standard song forms as a medium for developing these techniques.
