MUS 441 Advanced Jazz Theory and Improvisation
Three hours per week. Prerequisite: MUS 346. This course serves as a continuation of Jazz Improvisation II. It serves as an approach to advanced chord harmony and chord/scale relationships as applied to instrumental improvisation. The content of this course will involve a continued focus on modal and chord scale relationships as well as poly-chordal tonalities and melodic devices utilized by the modern improviser. The course will also cover unconventional chord progressions and sequences as a basis for substituted harmony on standard forms. These modern harmonic tools will also be studied and applied by way of transcribed harmonic examples and jazz solo analysis. This course will combine a lecture / practicum format with reading, writing and playing assignments.
